A Grass Roots Look at Liberalism

First off, in the interest of full disclosure I am not a liberal and I do not play one on television, but I do know, respect and live among many liberals who I am proud to call my friends and neighbors.

A bunch of us get together socially a couple times a week (read throw a few back and tell lies to each other) and as often as the conversation is extolling the virtues and woes of a professional sports team, it is about politics, political figures and the inherent hypocrisy in each.

I saw a very funny thread this morning titled “You might be a Conservative if …..” and thought I might share some of the more memorable swipes that have been taken at liberals in our biweekly intelligence summits (pun intended) at the local VFW.

You might be a liberal, if ……….

 1)  You passionately believe that capitalism, corporations and business owners are the causes of unemployment and poverty in the U.S.

 2)  You assert that our civil rights, as outlined in the Bill of Rights, are absolute except of course the 2nd and the 10th.

 3)  You loudly and often decry racial stereotyping or profiling, but just as loudly proclaim that white males are inherently racist whether they realize it or not.

 4)  You shout and bellow about elections being stolen, but fight tooth and nail against attempts at voter registration laws.

 5)  You think a Christmas Tree or children signing carols in school is an egregious violation of “separation of church and state”, but see nothing wrong nothing wrong with the government funding art, which is considered trash or pornographic by millions of people.

 6)  You fervently believe that everyone should be free to succeed on their own merits and abilities, but see nothing wrong with the favoritism of Affirmative Action

 7)  You can argue with a straight face, that once a student spends 8 years in college to achieve a Masters Degree in Incan Philosophy, it is the fault of the corporate oligarchy that there are no high paying jobs for him or her.

 8)  You believe that the constitution, which gives you the right to burn the American flag, also allows schools to suspend students who display that flag, because it hurts the feelings of Mexican American students who are allowed to proudly and openly display the Mexican flag on Cinco De Mayo.

 9)  …

You get the drift.

I am not saying that these are views are absolutely correct, nor that they need to be debated, but rather presenting them as some of the points that have arisen in our ideological debates (read insult exchange) at the VFW.

Neither I nor any member of our summits claims original ownership of any of the examples presented, they are part of American folklore.

Please feel free to add your own examples to the list.

Comments, counter points, additions to the lists and smart remarks are welcome and appreciated, but try and keep it a little lighthearted as a deep philosophic discussion of political ideology is not the point of the list.

Thanks to all

Robert in Ohio

A somewhat tongue in cheek look at liberals through the eyes (slightly fogged by alcohol at times) of the local VFW summit on political policy in the U.S.

Feel free to offer additions to the list

Try and keep it a little light hearted as the list is examples of how my friends and I poke fun at each other, I can assure you that the more liberal members of our group could (and might) publish their response to this article. I am not looking for, nor will I engage in an vitriolic debate of political philosophy.

Comments, counter points, remarks are all appreciated

Both lists made me giggle, as both contain some truth, and the truth can be some funny @!$%#! We need to not take each other so seriously, lighten up a little bit, and learn to laugh at ourselves. The US is pretty messed up right now, and both sides are to blame. Thanks Robert!

You have quite a concise list.

If I was not laughing, I would cry because there is truth in every point you have listed.

Thanks for the succinct talking points!! LOL

technically this list is not about liberalism...but progressive authoritarians.

if you want to know about liberalism I suggest reading

Liberalism by Ludwig von Mises.

but in reference to the list on the fake liberals of today...yep it would be accurate....and not funny at all...but sick.

Your list appears to be one that is conjured up in the mind of a right winger.

I too spend a lot of time among liberals (as a conservative who left the Republican Party after 45 years) and I can tell you that your list is about as factual as most statements by right wingers these days; in other words, NOT.

The list was meant to be a light hearted report on the "friendly" insults that are exchanged in our little group at the VFW, there are equally direct ones about conservatives thrown around as well

But at the end of the night after all the arguments and "insults" we are all friends and part ways as such

If you had read the article you would have seen

I am not saying that these are views are absolutely correct, nor that they need to be debated, but rather presenting them as some of the points that have arisen in our ideological debates (read insult exchange) at the VFW.

Or you can get intellectual on us and call people names

The difference between this list for "liberalism" and the one made for the conservatives is that yours is made up BS and the one about the conservative mindset is fairly dead on. Except maybe the "Citizen's United" ones (I think all Americans that aren't CEO campaign donors are aginst that ruling).

ps- Stop trying to fool people, you are about as much of an "independent" as Gingrich.

I'm aware of what humor is. And I would find these funnier if on an almost daily basis Robert didn't sound as if this is truly how he sees liberals and their views.

Oh wait, were we supposed to laugh at your reply?

No, wasn't trying to be a joke. I was refering to the other article where conservative "thoughts" are listed. I don't believe I have said anything incorrectly so no I don't need to read it over. Citizens United let's corporations spend unlimited money in campaign donations, so how is anything I said incorrect?

If you had read the article, you would realize that the list I provided are extracted from the playful insulting that goes on in our village VFW as I and my neighbors gather to solve the world's, the nation's and the Cleveland Indian's problems on a semi-weekly basis.

I also stated that whether the items were true or not was immaterial, as weused them as playful insults in our group

I am really not seeking your approval or disapproval so you really can lighten up

and the Cleveland Indian's problems on a semi-weekly basis.

All right, well first of all, Ricky Vaughn is going to need some glasses, his eyesight is horrible. Second, Pedro Cerano has got to be able to hit something besides fastballs. And Willie Mays Hayes has the wheels, but he's trying to hit it out of the park, instead of hitting grounders and legging it out. Don't get me started on Dorn.

As for Dorn, I figure he'll play better if he is pissed off, so maybe we can get Ricky to sleep with his wife?

As for Jeff, maybe we forgot one:

You might be a liberal if...you have trouble with reading and comprehension, and your sense of humor fits neatly within the "can dish it out but can't take it" category.

Robert - RE #1.6 and #1.7 - I too used to partake in the friendly banter such as you and your friends but the blatant lies, distortions, and hate shown by my former party for anyone who doesn't believe we should live in the early 19th century has become too much to tolerate. I no longer find it funny because the kind of thinking demonstrated by Republicans these days is beyond the pale and, if allowed to continue, will take our great country right into third world status.

Hate for hate sake is not a healthy approach to life and there are avenues to change that you can and probably are pursuing to make changes in who is elected to office and I applaud your involvement.

Was mentioned in the discussion, R, as B points out.

In reply to B: so you believe in the divine right of kings and that the church should be treated as they were in the Dark and Middle Ages? The exemption for church employees, as you call it, also allowed rampant bad behavior for centuries. So that's what you would continue?

Just because it was done that way way back when doesn't make it right. Look at slavery.

want to explain to me how corporations and business owners AREN"T the cure for unemployment?

That's easy, they are the answer becase ultimately liberals believe the government should own all corporations and business and then they would be perfect. They would pay a "fair wage" and never go out of business and profits would be a thing of the past nor would they ever fire anyone for any reason. A true liberal nirvana.

Hmmm... Well, I didn't really say they weren't... you know, the cure for unemployment and poverty, I just said that's one of the beliefs that defines one as a conservative. You know, just reversing the thing there.... the cure or cause thing.

I think the root cause of unemployment and poverty in America is the lack of jobs. I think American jobs have been shipped off to China and India in return for campaign contributions to our (sarc/) noble statesmen and gentleman legislators. (/sarc),.. and I don't think it matters a whit which party they are... or if they're liberal or conservative.

You know... how could commerce heal the economy if commerce isn't the problem?

If you believe government policy and legislation is the problem, are you liberal? You're obviously not a conservative... not you, you know, the editorial "you".

Don't forget, Randy McMurphy, conservatives believe that if you need a boost to the economy, start a war. The boost in weapons tech along with the ill-gotten gains from the war sends a much needed injection to any economy! That makes conservatives akin to the Vikings! You might be a liberal if you think the Nazi Party of Germany, or the US for that matter, is part of the right wing conservative movement when it has Socialist in it's very name "National Socialist German Workers' Party"; and calls for all businesses/corporations to be nationalized. Much like Hitler did prior to WWII.

You might be a liberal if you think Clinton was partially impeached for having sex, or an extra marital affair.

Clever idea, Bob. Thanks! WE are ALL too bloody "dark" these days. Want my latest humorous comment from one of today's "kids?" Son #1 was in a dressing room at a major dept. store loading up on after-Xmas buys when, after 10 minutes, the sales lady popped her head in & asked if everything was all right. W/O missing a beat, son #1 loudly retorted, "Yeah! You're all out of toilet paper in here."

I'm proud of him since he was off work ( computer industry ) for 11 months a year ago, but has managed to see the bright side of life & works to keep it that way. We need more of that-esp. us old fogeys

Robert, I can't substantiate it, because I never commented on the article and so I have lost track of it...and I can't even remember exactly what the article was about, but one of my all time favorite "vine" comments from a liberal was:

I hate all Repugnicants (or Teabaggers, can't remember which perjorative was used after all this time) because they are all such f#@^%$ BIGOTS!

The irony of the comment appeared to totally escape not only the poster, but all the people who voted it up!

        Great article, BTW!

Great stuff Robert! I saw the article to which you referred and left some droppings there as well. Seems that those who enjoyed that article the most are also those with the thinnest of skin when the tables are turned. I posted a response saying that I found the seeded article amusing and then linked to a couple of "You might be a liberal if..." sites, and was immediately met with an angry response and an irate suggestion to go write my own article. LOL. What gives? I thought that article was pretty amusing and your response here is funny as well my friend. Are we really the only two who can laugh at both? Anyway, here is my contribution and I am in no way claiming to be the original author of these little gems:

        9. You might be a liberal if ... you believe that the concept of "supply and demand" means that the Government must supply anything that you demand.

        10. You might be a liberal if ... you fervently believe in the right to freedom of speech and expression for all, except in the case of conservative radio talk show hosts, corporate executives, rich folks (if conservative of course), and Christians.

        11. You might be a liberal if ... you are exceedingly compassionate and generous...with other people's money.

        12. You might be a liberal if ... you feel that corporations and banks are robbing you of all your wealth via your own voluntary purchases, borrowing, and investments, and yet have no problem with growing Government taxation.

This one might sound offensive at first, but think about it,

        13. You might be a liberal if... you think that AIDS is spread by insufficient funding.

I agree on #13, hence my cautious introduction to it. I saw it on another website and I considered using a different issue. In reality it could apply to many issues where folks feel that bad choices and irresponsible actions on the part of individuals can somehow be solved by throwing tax dollars at the problem. I don't know, call me crazy, but it seems to me the best way to solve any problem in life is to accept one's personal responsibility for it, and more importantly to accept ones responsibility to personally take the steps or actions necessary to really solve the problem at its root.

You might be a liberal if you think we can improve our health care system by putting it under the control of the same government that brought us FEMA, the TSA, and the IRS.

You might be a liberal if you whine about jobs going overseas then vote to eliminate light bulbs made in America in favor of those ONLY produced in other countries.

...and if you don't recognize that the mercury and other chemicals in those foreign bulbs will eventually create an environmental problem far worse than the power plants required to generate the energy they supposedly "save".

        I'm such a gear head, I know....sorry.

While on the topic of energy:

You might be a liberal if... you rail on about the dangers of dependence on foreign oil, but then continually vote for those who wish to block any development of domestic oil and gas resources and nuclear power.

You might be a Liberal if you thought raising the debt ceiling was wrong under Bush...and now think that the Republicans are being obstructionist for voting against raising it under Obama.
